Docklands will be transformed into a world-class seafood dining precinct to help bring more visitors to the area, if Nick Reece is re-elected as Lord Mayor.
The Docklands Seafood Dining Precinct will bring Melbourne’s renowned food culture and amazing chefs to the waterfront, providing a unique destination for locals and visitors alike to enjoy fresh seafood in a vibrant atmosphere.
Set along the Docklands foreshore, the area will include open-air dining, food stalls, restaurants, a seafood school, all surrounded by public open space designed to create a welcoming and exciting environment for visitors and diners.
This project will not only enhance Melbourne’s reputation as Australia’s food capital but also help attract more people to the area and boost local businesses.
Under the plan, a re-elected Lord Mayor Nick Reece will:
- Task the Melbourne 3000 board – made up of key business leaders in our city alongside Docklands and QVM stakeholders – to develop the Docklands Seafood Dining Precinct concept and bring it to life.
- Fund a business case to help determine the best way to unlock the foreshore of Docklands to create a vibrant, exciting and pleasant atmosphere and to foster a wide variety of restaurants and other dining options.
- Work closely with local landholders, residents and the wider Docklands community to identify the final location of the precinct and then deliver on it.
- Work with the Melbourne Maritime Heritage Network to identify ways the precinct can also celebrate the Docklands rich maritime history.
- Secure funding from federal and state government to match council funding of the precinct
While the Queen Victoria Market will always be the home of fresh fish retailing in Melbourne, the proposed Seafood Precinct will draw inspiration from some of the world’s great seafood markets, including Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market and San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf.
It will reflect Melbourne’s rich culinary diversity, featuring a variety of seafood eateries, from charcoal-grilled octopus to sushi, oyster bars, and ceviche stalls.
